During the 1880s, the U.S. Lighthouse Board saw the need to guide mariners through the treacherous rocky Oregon waters around Yaquina Head. In 1872, Oregon's second oldest and tallest currently working lighthouse was completed. This light was manned by keepers and assistants who, every night, would climb the 114 steps carrying gallons of oil to fill the lamp and light the lantern. The beam of the lantern was concentrated through the fresnel lens and the strong, focused beam guided those in need to the protection of safe harbor afforded by Yaquina Bay in Newport, therefore, preventing disaster and the loss of life. This story plays out over and over again throughout the Pacific Northwest, and indeed, throughout the world.

Now, over 100 years later, the marriage of safe harbor and the protection of animals comes once again to the Pacific Northwest. The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary was formed to guide animals in need to the safety of calm waters. The Board of Directors, volunteers and supporters are dedicated to light the lantern to guide those abused and neglected animals; to prevent disasters; and to prevent needless loss of life.. a guiding light to safe harbor.

We need you

As all lighthouses need keepers and assistants to keep the lanterns lit, the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary needs you. Please join us in our efforts of shining the light. For information on how you can help, please contact us.

The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Tax deductible donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. Please contact your financial advisor if you need more information about tax deductions when giving to charities.

About us: A bit of history

Providing a guiding light

to safe harbor

Bart, the miniature donkey, is one of over 100 animals that have been rescued by the sanctuary.

In 1866, Henry Bergh founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). He was moved to action when he witnessed the brutal beating of an exhausted cart horse.

 How You Can Help

Helping out: Volunteering

Please join us for a work party

As with all farms, the work is never done, but it does bring a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Here DJ gets shorn.

Meet new friends while helping us with our chores and spending time with the animals.

Bring tools, gloves and clothes that you can get dirty. Treats for the animals are always appreciated: carrots and apples are their favorites.

When:

We start at 10:00 am and end at 1:00 pm, when we stop for lunch and a roundtable discussion of any topic concerning animal welfare. Please bring your own vegetarian lunch. Check website for updated dates and times. http://www.lighthousefarmsanctuary.org/helping/volunteering.html

Lighthouse appreciates all our volunteers and sponsors

The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Tax deductible donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. Please contact your financial advisor if you need more information about tax deductions when giving to charities.

There are two basic ways to help the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary with its mission to rescue and care for abused and neglected farm animals: direct assistance and indirect assistance.

Direct assistance

This is where money, materials, or time is given directly to the Sanctuary.

[1] Sponsor an animal

For only a few dollars each month, you know you are making a difference in your favorite animal's lives. These make great gifts for the people you love! For more information see .

[2] Write a check

If you want to make sure that your money goes towards new buildings and paying off our mortgage, simply write "Capital Campaign" on your check. Or, you can donate to the Molly Medical Fund which was set up to provide emergency health care for our animals. Just write "Molly Medical Fund" on your check.

Monetary donations to the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary help us continue our work with the animals. Please send checks to:

Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary
36831 Richardson Gap Rd.
Scio, OR 97374-9742

You can also donate through Just Give, an organization that processes credit card donations for non-profit organizations.

[3] Donate securities

We are sometimes asked: Can I donate securities that have appreciated in value to Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary and not have to pay capital gains taxes of the value of the gift?

Short answer: YES.

Go here for details: Security donations

[4] Volunteer time

Help clean pens, set up for events, make repairs, plant trees or anything else we might need to keep up the farm. The work schedule is always posted in the left column of our website. For more information see volunteering.

[5] Book a tour

Are you involved with other groups? Arrange a group tour at the farm. It only costs $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children and you get to meet the animals and hear their stories.

[6] Donate a wish list item

Donating food, tools, and other materials is very helpful. Please take a look at our wish list for items that could be put to good use.

[7] Buy something from our online store

Look fantastic in your new clothing and be happy knowing that the proceeds go towards helping the animals. Visit our store, it's open 24/7 online

[8] Spread the word

Tell others about us or invite them to come with you to the farm. The more people who know about us, the more help we get!

Indirect assistance

This is where businesses give part of their profit to the Sanctuary if you shop at their store or use their services. In many cases you need to specify that you would like your donation to go to the Sanctuary.

[1] Rent Cline's Condo for Charities

When you sign the guest book and put Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary as you favorite charity, they will donate funds to us. For more information see Blue Pacific Vacation Rental.

[2] Use Yvonne LeGrice to purchase or sell real estate

When you use the services of Yvonne LeGrice, a portion of her profits will go to the Sanctuary.

[3] Participate in Change for Change from Whole Foods Market

The Lighthouse is part of Whole Foods Market's Change for Change program which encourages reuse of bags by offering guests 5 cents for bags they bring in to use. Guests can choose to put their 5 cents, in the form of a wooden nickel, into a donation jar. While you help save resources and shop at a store that believes "companies, like individuals, must assume their share of responsibility as tenants of Planet Earth," you can help the Sanctuary.

[4] Shop online at Giveline

Shop at Giveline, which will donate 7% to 33% (average 16%) of your purchase to the Lighthouse. Please use the Giveline link button so that the Lighthouse is assured to get credit for your purchse.

[5] Shop at Powell's Books

One of the finest, if not the best, book stores in the world. When you shop there through our link below (or the link in the left column) we receive a small commission. Everyone wins on this one

Send us an e-mail, let us know what you can do to help. Or just share your stories with us. We would love to hear from you. -The Top Hatter-
